How to Remove a Salt Cell

To remove a salt cell, turn off the chlorinator and the pump at the breaker, close the valves, unplug the cell cord, then loosen both union nuts by hand and lift the cell out. Most cells need no tools; keep track of the two o-rings. Plan on it every 2 to 3 months to inspect, and before freezing weather.

Steps to remove a salt cell

Six steps, with the power off first.

  1. Power off at the breaker. Hayward: "turn the power off at the circuit breaker." Unplug a plug-in unit such as the Salt & Swim 3C instead.
  2. Make sure the pump is off. Hayward's cleaning guide says to "deactivate the pool pump before removing the Turbo Cell".
  3. Close the valves. AstralPool's cell instructions say to "close applicable valves" first.
  4. Unplug the cell cord at its connector.
  5. Loosen both union nuts by hand.
  6. Lift the cell out and find both o-rings. One sits at each union.
Exploded view: the cord unplugs from the top of the cell, two union nuts on the pipe ends loosen by hand, the cell lifts straight up, and one o-ring sits at each end
On a Hayward Aqua Rite, step 4 means opening the control box: the door must be open to reach the cell cable connector.

Hayward, Pentair and Zodiac Jandy cells

Union cells all come out the same way; the Salt & Swim 3C is the odd one, its cell slides out of a vessel that stays plumbed in.

CellUnionsRemove and inspect
Hayward Aqua Rite with TurboCellBy handEvery 3 months, 500 hours or after cleaning the filter
Hayward Salt & Swim 3CNone: unscrew the retaining nut, pull the cell from the vesselNo fixed interval; more often in hard water
Pentair IntelliChlorNot stated; two o-ring unionsEvery 2 months, more often in hard water
Zodiac Jandy AquaPureHand tighten onlyMonthly at first, later twice a year

Inspect before you clean

Look down the barrel first. Hayward says to check for “scale formation (light colored crusty or flaky deposits) on the plates”; compare with what a dirty salt cell looks like.

Clean plates

Reinstall

Hayward: no deposits, reinstall.

Light scale

Hose it

High pressure garden hose, then a plastic or wood tool. Never metal.

Heavy scale

Acid wash

Hayward: severe cases only.

Hayward, Pentair and Jandy all use the same acid mix. Jandy and Pentair cap the soak at 30 minutes; Hayward’s TurboCell guide uses 15 minutes on a salt cell stand, cord side down.

Acid wash = 1 gallon of water + 1 quart of muriatic acid

Acid into water, never the reverse. Hayward’s manual prints it in capitals: “ALWAYS ADD ACID TO WATER - NEVER ADD WATER TO ACID.” Full method: how to clean a salt cell. What shortens cell life: how long a salt cell lasts. Handling and storage rules for the acid itself are on muriatic acid for a salt pool.

Removing the cell for winter

Pull it before the first freeze; Hayward warns the cell and flow switch “will be damaged by freezing water”. The salt won’t protect it: at 3,200 ppm, the freezing point of salt water is about 31.6°F, barely below fresh water’s 32°F. What comes out varies:

Jandy AquaPure

Cell and sensor

"Remove the cell, clean and store it," and unscrew the sensor from its tee.

Pentair IntelliChlor

Cell

Remove, clean and store, as for Jandy.

Hayward Salt & Swim 3C

Vessel stays

The control box and vessel "should not be removed"; drain the lines.

Drain the pump, filter, and supply and return lines too. Jandy offers “an optional Spool Piece” to fill the gap; what a kit does and doesn’t cover is on salt water pool closing kit. Full routine: how to winterize a salt water pool.

Putting the cell back

Seat both o-rings, hand tighten the unions, plug in the cord, then power on. AstralPool’s three-monthly check says to “clean and grease O rings or replace if necessary”.

Reset the Inspect Cell light. On a Hayward TurboCell system, hold the diagnostic button for 3 seconds to clear it and restart the 500 hour count. After winter, follow the start-up order to rebalance first.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to turn off the pump to remove a salt cell?

Yes. Hayward says to turn off the power and deactivate the pump before the cell comes out.

How often should a salt cell come out?

Every 2 to 3 months on most cells; see the brand table above.

Do I need tools to remove a salt cell?

Not for Hayward Aqua Rite or Jandy AquaPure unions, which are hand tight. On a Salt & Swim 3C you unscrew the retaining nut; its strap wrench is only for installing the vessel.

What goes in place of the cell over winter?

A spool piece or dummy cell. If the plates look worn, read salt cell replacement first; more care pages are on the salt cell hub.
