Is your salt low, is your cell dying, or is your reading wrong?
Every saltwater pool owner eventually faces that question, and almost nobody can answer it. So they guess. Usually they add salt, because salt is cheap and a new cell is not.
Here is what that guess costs when it is wrong.
An owner posting on Inyo’s guide to reducing salt wrote: “I added to much salt to my 15000 gallon pool because I did not realize my T-cell was going bad.” They paid for the salt, then the drain, then the cell.
Another owner on the same page gave the cleanest evidence of what was really happening: “Turned on old cell for one last reading. It was 2500. Put in new cell and it said 3600.” Eleven hundred ppm of difference, and not a grain of salt moved.

Why this happens to careful people
Your salt system has no salt sensor in it.
What it has is a cell with metal plates, and it watches how easily electricity crosses the water between them, adjusted for temperature. Saltier water conducts better, so it infers a salinity figure. A long-time moderator on PoolForum stated it directly: salt chlorine generators “measure conductivity, not salt.” The Poolside support knowledge base says most systems “estimate salt levels using an algorithm.”
Which means scale on the plates, worn plates, cold water, low flow, or the wrong cell model selected in your control menu will all move that number with no salt moving anywhere.
Nobody tells owners this. So when the panel says LOW SALT, they add salt.
What you get
The reading reconciliation decision tree. Your panel, a titration, a test strip and the pool store will give you four different numbers. This is the order of trust, what each specific disagreement pattern means, and the 400 ppm rule that tells you when to stop looking at your water and start looking at your equipment. This is the single most-asked question on every pool forum and it has never had a proper answer.
Brand target sheets. Actual target salinity windows for Hayward, Pentair IntelliChlor, Jandy AquaPure and TruClear, CircuPool and Intex systems, plus the low-salt system distinction that generic advice never mentions. Running at a generic 3,200 ppm is wrong for some units.
The cell-type audit. Two pages that catch a control panel configured for a different cell than the one you own. One owner’s reading jumped 1,000 ppm from changing a single menu setting. Another chased a low-salt warning that turned into a high-salt warning from the same water, because the panel was set for a T-3 with a T-15 installed. Thirty second check, and people lose whole seasons to it.
The cell health test. The volts and amps check by polarity, what the numbers should read, what the serial number tells you, the plate inspection, and the acid wash dilution ratios and frequency. Written for someone who, reading the experts explain it on a forum, wrote “Sorry I’m utterly confused.”
The false alarm calendar. Cold water below roughly 60°F, spring startup, low flow, air in the line, post-rain dilution. When to ignore the light instead of acting on it. One owner hit 4,800 ppm in a 35,000 gallon pool “after adding six extra bags at spring opening,” which is what this page prevents.
The cell register. A spreadsheet that tracks install date, brand, model, expected end of life, warranty expiry, and your amperage trend over time. So the replacement gets planned and budgeted instead of surprising you in July. This is the thing both major pool apps charge a subscription to keep: PoolMath restricts a free log to a single day of history, and Swim University’s app is $49.99 a year, annual only.
Bonus: the drain-down rescue plan. If you have already over-salted, the staged dilution plan with the second-order chemistry worked out: gallons, inches, refill cost, and where your CYA, calcium hardness and alkalinity land afterwards. Nothing else does that part.

Who this is for
You inherited a saltwater pool with a house. The most-liked comment under one of the big saltwater maintenance videos is “I just moved into a house with an above ground salt water pool. I didnt realize i was buying a chemistry lab.” If that is you, start here rather than with a $900 part.
Your panel and your test disagree and nobody will tell you which to believe. This is the kit’s central chapter.
